Try used cloth diapers first.

Try used cloth diapers first.
Levon in one of his cloth diapers.

If you are on the fence about what kind of cloth diaper to use or just the use of cloth diapers all together try purchasing used cloth diapers.  Buying used cloth diapers is a great way to have a trail run to find the right fit for your baby.  You can purchase used diapers in a couple of different ways. One way is through a place like Ebay or Craigslist.  Another way is to go to a diaper consignment sale. A diaper consignment sale is a good way to go. People bring their gently used cloth diapers, diaper covers, pails etc. to sell to people who are fairly new to the cloth diaper world or just want to try it out with out the big expense.  One of the perks to buying at a diaper consignment is there are usually stipulations on what shape the diapers have to be in before they can be sold at the sale.

If the thought of used cloth diapers is unappealing you can wash your diapers using a technique called "Stripping" your diapers to strip them of residues and germs before use.

Stripping Diapers

1. Take your clean diapers and wash them on hot 2-3 times without detergent. Rinse them until the water runs clear and there are no suds left in the rinse water.

2. Wash your clean diapers on hot with a squirt of Dawn dish washing soap. BE CAREFUL! If you own a high efficiency washing machine, Dawn dish washing liquid is NOT a low sudsing, HE approved detergent. Check with your washing machine manufacturer before choosing this method of stripping your diapers.

Diaper consignment sale coming up in February at Mother Nurture in Lexington Ky.

    A readers story!

To submit your birthing story click here!

A special thank you to Laura, Craig and Barbara for sharing their story.

My actual due date was July 7th, but my water broke at 6 am on Friday, July 1st. There was no warning as far as having contractions or anything like that. I woke up, and felt unusually wet. So I went to the bathroom and noticed a small stream of water continuously coming out. Then a big burst of water! I went and woke up my husband and said "I think my water just broke!". He wanted to see for himself, so back to the bathroom, and the stream of water continued, then another burst! About an hour later, after no contractions started, I called our midwife, Katie Isaac. She said to just wait and see if contractions would start and call her back in 5-6 hrs.

Contractions weren't starting! So I called Deb, our Bradley instructor around 8:30-9:00. Deb reassured me that all was okay, and to try nipple stimulation and thumb sucking. I sucked on one sucker so hard that the roof of my mouth became raw! And I didn't actually start the nipple stimulation until early in the afternoon. I must admit, during the morning, my husband and I were so unprepared. Weirdly enough, I had packed my bag the night before, but still had some things I wanted to gather. We had not even taken the car seat out of the box it came in, and we still wanted to purchase a digital camera and some food for me to eat. So, around 10 in the morning, Craig went off to Wal-Mart (our least favorite place to shop), for a quick trip to gather all the odd items. On the way home, he stopped and cleaned out the car--getting rid of nervous energy, and when he got home, he put the car seat in the car. I was relaxed all morning, calling my friends and sister, so excited that our baby would be born today!

I hadn't eaten any breakfast or drank any coffee (I'm a coffee-a-holic!), so I was really hungry, but didn't want to overeat. I ate a sandwich and some soup around lunchtime, then Craig and I went for a nice long walk with our dog. When we got home, I began the nipple stimulation, and did some yoga stretches, and tried to remain calm. At this point, all my friends are calling me now, anxious to hear if anything has happened. I called Katie to keep her apprised of the situation, and she reassured me to remain calm, but that contractions needed to start soon. She said that if contractions hadn't started by 6:00 pm that I should come on in to the hospital.

About 4:00 pm, some weak contractions began! They were anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes apart and would last anywhere from 20 to 45 seconds. Whenever my arms got tired and I stopped nipple stimulation (NS), the contractions got weaker, shorter, and further apart. I called Katie to tell her what was going on and she said "great, keep it up", and to get back to her later that evening. Through the evening, I kept up with the NS but the contractions remained weak, short, and not consistently close. We finally called Katie again in the evening and it was decided to go on in to the hospital and start on a low dose of pitocin. This was due to the fact that my water had already broken which put me on a timeline for having the birth due to the risk of infection. We arrived at the hospital in Frankfort at a little after midnite.

After being admitted, they checked me and I was just at 1 cm. They wanted to go ahead and start the pitocin, but we asked the nurse if we could take a short nap as we had been up pretty much all day. The nurse agreed and said she would be back in at 2:00 am. At 2 am, and after 3 needle pricks to find a vein, they started me on a very low dose of pitocin and contractions started soon thereafter. At about 6 am, Katie came in and checked me and said I was at 5 cm. I asked if I could go off the pitocin as I was pretty much confined to the bed while on it and I wanted to get up and move around. Katie agreed since I was showing progress but told me that if progress didn't continue then I would need to go back on the pitocin. I walked and squatted a lot for about 3 hrs and they checked me again; still at 5 cm. So, back on the pitocin. They checked me again at 12 noon and I was at 7 cm. I asked to go off the pitocin once again since I was showing progress. They again agreed and I walked and squatted for about 2 hrs. At this time I figured out that I was most comfortable laboring while standing up instead of sitting or lying down.

At 2 pm they checked me again and I was still at 7 cm. At this point Katie informed me that it was Dr's protocol that the baby be born by 6 pm (36 hrs after water broke) and that if labor did not progress towards that goal, then a c-section may be needed. I asked if an epidural would help get me there but they said not necessarily, that they needed to know how strong the contractions were and the only way to do that was with an internal monitor. We didn't want that but they pretty much insisted (this is not the internal fetal monitor that they screw in the baby's head, but a monitor that slides up past the baby into the uterus to measure how strong the contractions are). Well, they couldn't get the internal monitor in past the baby's head, so we were relieved.

At that point, I was put back on the pitocin and we really hoped that things would get moving along. It was at this time that Craig tells me I started showing some signs of transition (from 7 cm to 9 cm) as I was having lots of pain and unsure if I could keep going. I was also extremely tired by now. I was mainly standing up next to the bed during contractions, and sitting down to rest in between them. I was so exhausted that Craig had to help me up each time. I would doze off while sitting down between the contractions. At 5 pm, they checked me again, and I was at 9 cm plus. WOOHOO!!!! I then began having feelings of needing to go to the bathroom (#2), but it was the onset of the urge to push. So, soon thereafter, I went into pushing stage. Talk about a LOT of work. I would take a deep breath and PUUUUUUSH, then another small breath and PUUUUUUUSH, and then one more small push and then rest. Finally, they could see the baby's head appearing and then disappearing each time. Then, the baby crowned!!! Katie tried to tell me to ease up on the pushing now but the urge was too strong and I gave one more mighty push and, at 6:42 pm, July 2nd, out popped the baby!!! Craig had two hands there to catch the baby and then the student midwife (Kristi) took the baby and laid it up on my belly (the umbilical cord was too short for the baby to reach my chest). Once on the belly, we parted the legs to find that we had a beautiful baby GIRL!! After about 20 minutes, the umbilical cord stopped pulsing and Craig cut the cord. Then, little Barbara Audelle was placed on my breast where she began nosing around and nuzzling the breast. She weighed in at 7 lb, 1 oz and was 20 inches long. I had to have 6 stitches for some tearing. This was partly due to the last big push, but also due to little Barbara having one hand on her cheek as she came out.

The folks at the hospital were very supportive and never once offered pain meds or an epidural. They all encouraged me throughout the labor reassuring me that I could do this! It was an incredible and very positive experience despite the lengthy and exhausting labor and birth!

    She's worth it!

    Baby wearing!

Having  new baby and having a life can be tricky.  It doesn't ever seem like we have enough hands to do what needs to be done.  Baby wearing can change your life. How? you might ask. Well, don't knock it 'till you've tried it.

Top 10 reasons to wear your baby:
    1) Baby will fuss less, and feel more comforted by being close to you.
    2) Your baby will learn a lot just by being near you and watching you do your every day tasks.
    3) More comfortable for you than carrying him/her around.
    4) Reduces postpartum depression.
    5) Breastfeed hands free, yea you heard right you can breastfeed and grocery shop at the same time.
    6) Gives Dad a chance to bond with baby too.
    7) Keep baby happy and play with your older children.
    8) Go for a walk to get some excercise while your baby sleeps
    9) Get some chores done around the house during "fussy time" and soothe your baby while being productive.
    10) Never have to choose between eating and comforting your baby.

    Natural Childbirth

When my husband and I found out we were pregnant we were so excited.  We started thinking of names and picking out nursery colors, all the typical things a couple who is pregnant probably do.  One of the things that I really wanted to do was natural childbirth.
So, one of my friends told me about a book called "Husband Coached Childbirth". If natural childbirth is what you want this is a must read.  Who ever you decide to have as your child birthing partner should read this book with you.  It will change your perspective on childbirth.

As the due date for our son Levon approached us we read this book together every night.  I prayed for strength to go through labor naturally and to not kill my husband in the process :).  One morning we woke up and the moment we had so anxiously anticipated for so long was here.  We arrived at the hospital, they put us in our room and the child birth journey began.  I had been having contractions for about 2 days, but these were much stronger.  With every passing hour they became stronger and stronger.  As my labor became more and more painful I became more and more determined to do it with no drugs at all.  After a long "drug free" labor the time came for me to push.  With every contraction came words of encouragement from my husband "You can do it babe, you are doing an amazing job."
As I pushed and pushed for what seemed like an eternity out came this little bitty person.  I thought to myself "I cant believe that was inside me."  As my husband handed him to me It was the most comforting feeling in the world to hold my son.

After the birth was over my husband and I toasted our son with a cold glass of orange juice and gave each other a kiss.  The nurse came and told us our room was ready so I walked down the hall to our room got settled and was ready to see our son again.  He had to stay in the nursery for about 4 hours after being born for observation. So Ryan wheeled me down to the nursery to see our sweet little boy.  The nurse handed him to me and I was so happy.  I looked at my husband smiled and said "here you hold him. "  Then after handing him to Ryan the strangest feeling came over me. I began getting a little light headed so I called for the nurse to come over. She no more than stood in front of me and "bam" I passed out right there in her cleavage :).  Thats right I took a few moments to take a nap in the comfort of my nurse's cleavage.  I woke up realized what had happened and had a pretty good laugh.

    Thanks for reading!!!!

    Do something for yourself

As a mom sometimes we forget to take time for ourselves.  Sometimes its hard to find things to do for yourself.  Especially with out spending a lot of money.   So I have some ideas to get you started.

First, if you are interested in learning a new craft you might consider taking a class to learn how to begin your new craft.  Even though in this day and age you can learn how to do pretty much anything on line, I think it's good to take a class and have adult interaction.  I have signed up to take a knitting 101 class and I am super excited about it.

Second, if you enjoy reading a good book set aside an hour in the day to curl up in a comfy chair with a cup of coffee and that book you have been meaning to read but never got around to it.  Make your time when your little one lays down for a nap or early in the AM before they wake up.

Third, have a girls day out.  Round up a grandparent or a friend and recruit them to babysit for a few hours.  Go out to lunch or have a cup of coffee with your friends.  Or, just go out and have a day of doing things by yourself.  Go to a local coffee shop and spend time with yourself.

Click the picture below to check out "sarahbeedesigns".  She is teaching the knitting 101 class that I am attending. She might still have a few spots available. She also has a lot of cool stuff for sale so CHECK IT OUT!!!!!!
